Monster types

Large monsters fall into a few groups. Most are regular monsters from the Monster Hunter series, sorted into types such as Fanged Wyvern, Bird Wyvern, Flying Wyvern, Brute Wyvern and Piscine Wyvern. On top of those, Outlanders adds Radiant Monsters, and it brings back Elder Dragons and subspecies. Each group plays differently, and two of them have a rule you need to know.

GroupWhat makes it differentCan be captured?
Regular monstersStandard large monstersTo be confirmed
Radiant MonstersCorrupted by Radiantite, stronger, with Radiant RageNo
Elder DragonsLiving calamities in a class of their ownNo
SubspeciesNew look and changed attacksTo be confirmed

Radiant Monsters and Elder Dragons cannot be captured, so you must slay them to complete a hunt. Whether every regular monster can be captured is not stated in our sources. Plan your hunt with that in mind, especially if you came to capture a target.

Best element by monster

Game8 rates each monster's weakness with stars across five elements. The table below shows the strongest rating for each monster with full data, so you can pick a weapon fast. These ratings were decoded from page icons, so check them in the game's monster field guide before you craft for a hunt.

Best elementMonsters
FireGreat Jagras, Barroth, Paolumu, Radiant Great Jagras, Radiant Barroth, Ruger Aidal
WaterKulu-Ya-Ku, Great Girros, Anjanath, Radiant Anjanath, Radiant Kulu-Ya-Ku, Radiant Tobi-Kadachi
ThunderPukei-Pukei, Jyuratodus, Legiana, Tzitzi-Ya-Ku, Radiant Rathian, Radiant Pukei-Pukei
IceDiablos, Odogaron, Tzitzi-Ya-Ku, Radiant Jyuratodus, Ruger Aidal
DragonRathian, Rathalos, Pink Rathian, Radobaan, Radiant Great Girros, Radiant Tzitzi-Ya-Ku

Some monsters appear twice because they share a top rating, such as Ruger Aidal with Fire and Ice. Tobi-Kadachi has no top rating, with two stars for Fire, Water and Ice. Nergigante, Kushala Daora and several Radiant monsters are listed as TBD, so their weaknesses are to be confirmed. We will add them as data arrives.

Radiant Monsters

Radiant Monsters are new to Outlanders. They are corrupted by Radiantite, which gives them an orange coloration and new abilities. Their movesets differ a little from their regular versions, and they are generally stronger. Most of them have a clear weak point to focus on.

Radiant Rage is their signature mechanic. When a Radiant monster enters this state, you need to hit its weak point, called a radiant part, to knock it out and create an opening. This is the main habit to learn before you take on harder hunts. Game8's table includes these confirmed targets:

  • Radiant Rathian: weak to Thunder. Sever its tail early, or stay clear of its crystals.
  • Radiant Great Jagras: weak to Fire. Stop it from eating and swelling its stomach.
  • Radiant Pukei-Pukei: weak to Thunder. Stock antidotes for its venom.
  • Radiant Anjanath: weak to Water. Target its head to stagger it.
  • Radiant Kulu-Ya-Ku: weak to Water. Focus on the Radiantite it holds.
  • Radiant Barroth: weak to Fire. Strip its mud, and use blunt weapons on its head.
  • Radiant Jyuratodus: weak to Ice. Remove the mud clinging to its body.

EX Radiant fights can be far harder. Kanima struggled with EX Radiant Legiana in a pre-launch stream, mainly through back-to-back ice attacks and low party damage. Treat that as a warning, because the numbers may have changed.

Elder Dragons

Three Elder Dragons are known so far. Kushala Daora and Nergigante are returning monsters, and Game8 still lists their data as TBD. Ruger Aidal is the new one, marked as a first appearance on Monster Hunter Wiki. It is native to Aesoland and hardens radiant particles into armor and crystals.

Ruger Aidal has a three-star weakness to Fire and Ice. Game8 advises landing well-timed consecutive blows on freshly formed crystals to shatter them and stagger it. IGN's hands-on, from a pre-launch build, also shows a charged lance attack around the middle of the fight that can pierce guards. A careful parry breaks it and staggers the monster, though the exact attack name is to be confirmed.

IGN also managed to break off the tail during that fight. Expect heavy damage, since the writer describes one-shot risks. Prepare your best gear and a strong Fire or Ice setup. Its habitat is still listed as unknown.

Subspecies

Two subspecies are available to hunt: Pink Rathian and Black Diablos. Each has a slightly different look and changed attacks. Pink Rathian wields its toxic tail with skill, weakening prey with poison first. Aim for the softer tip of its tail, because the base is heavily armored.

Black Diablos is marked as a first appearance on Monster Hunter Wiki, and it has a Radiant version too. Its weakness and habitat are to be confirmed. Pink Rathian also has a Radiant variant, and that data is pending as well.

How to hunt common monsters

Most monsters have a trick that makes the fight easier, so check these before you go.

  • Great Jagras: hit its bloated belly to make it disgorge its meal.
  • Kulu-Ya-Ku: use Flash Pods or obstacles to make it drop its rock.
  • Pukei-Pukei: clear its favorite plants before the fight.
  • Jyuratodus: lure it onto dry land, then wash away its mud.
  • Barroth: strip its mud armor with water weapons.
  • Anjanath: aim for its throat to suppress flame buildup.
  • Diablos: bait its horn charges into sand pillars.
  • Odogaron: let it exhaust itself after a rampage, then strike.
  • Paolumu: attack its air sacs so it cannot build up air.
  • Legiana: destroy its membranes, and use poison to limit it.
  • Tzitzi-Ya-Ku: circle behind it as its fins open, then break them.
  • Radobaan: attack it while it rolls to topple it.

Where monsters live

Game8 lists habitats for most monsters, across eight areas. These are Outlands, Muddy Swamp, Desert Oasis, Mistwood, Saltthorn Dunes, Spore Isle, Gloomshade Gorge and Luminant Lakelands. Early monsters such as Great Jagras appear in several of them. Jyuratodus and Barroth are listed only in Desert Oasis.

Small monsters

Monster Hunter Wiki lists 12 small monsters: Apceros, Aptonoth, Felyne, Gajalaka, Gajau, Girros, Hornetaur, Jagras, Kelbi, Kestodon, Mernos and Noios. Gajau, Jagras, Kestodon and Mernos also have Radiant versions. Felyne appears here as a small monster too. These matter less for gear, but they are part of the world's ecology.

Upcoming monsters

Monster Hunter Wiki lists Estrellian as an upcoming monster. No details are available yet, so its type, element and release date are to be confirmed. Game8 also has many Radiant variants marked as TBD, including Radiant Rathalos, Radiant Diablos and Radiant Odogaron. Expect this list to grow as Season 0 continues.
